WHAT IS THAT THREE-O MARK?

When I was a child, a sportscaster, Bill Stern, had a radio program with interesting stories from sports history. He was a great storyteller. Howard Cosell said that Stern ?dared to be different.? At the end of each program he would say, ?And that?s the three-o mark for tonight.?

I always thought that he was saying, ?the thrill mark.? It wasn?t until I was in high school that I understood to what he was referring.

MOTHER’S DAY 2005

---Last week, DOMINICAL, the Sunday supplement of the Caracas daily ULTIMAS NOTICIAS carried an interesting article about young mothers raising their little children in jail.

The article ends with Nicolasa Galindo talking about her life in prison. Tears are falling from her eyes and her five-year-old daughter, Jorjelis Nicole, asks her if she is crying. She answers no, it is just sweat coming from her eyes.

The author noted it was not a hot day.

I read in the January 28 issue of the National Catholic Reporter that there were fifteen more people executed in the United States under the death penalty since mid-October 2004. Ten of the fifteen were in Texas.

That’s 67%! But the population of Texas is only about 7%. President Bush and Vice-President Cheney must be proud of their adopted home state. It certainly likes to be number one in everything.

I also found this quotation challenging: “It is undeniably necessary to protect society from one who has killed and who may kill again. It is undeniable foolish for the state itself to continue the killing. . .
